Why India's gold price is higher

India imports most of its gold and charges 15% import duty. On top of that, buyers pay 3% GST. In the USA, the bullion price is close to the international spot price; sales tax on bullion depends on the state, and many states exempt it.

Why jewellery can still be cheaper in India

Indian jewellers usually charge making charges of roughly 8–25% for 22K jewellery, and the variety of 22K designs is far larger. In the USA, 22K jewellery is less common and retail markups on finished jewellery are often higher.

Simple rule

Coins or bars as an investment: generally cheaper in the USA. 22K jewellery for weddings: often better value and choice in India. If you carry gold into India, check the duty-free limits first.
